There is a way to get your personal ringtones on the Samsung Exclaim for free, using your own songs, plus pictures or video!

After recently buying a Samsung Exclaim from Sprint, trying to upload an MP3 as a personal ringtone might seem difficult. Sprint's software on the Exclaim encourages the download of ringtones purchased from Sprint's online store. Some ringtones may be downloaded if you have Internet service available on your phone. Users may experience problems when trying to download the MP3 ringtones available on the Internet.

There are no clear instructions on how to get personal ringtones on an Exclaim phone without going to the Sprint store. It can be done but it takes a little more work. With the use of a video editor and access to the Internet for uploads and downloads, and a link between the phone and your PC, a user may create a personal video ringtone.

Introducing Video Ringtones on the Samsung Exclaim

The Exclaim can use video ringtones, uploaded to the memory card, as a personal ringtones. The ringtones need to be formatted correctly, but this can be done with any video editor. The video just needs to be formatted properly, as Sprint requires a specific file format known as .3g2.

A .3g2 format is similar to the 3GP format, as the Samsung Exclaim is a third generation phone. This video format is ideal for the compression required for phones. It makes videos easier to upload, and videos can be processed to this format via your video editor, or through online converters.

With the inability to easily import an MP3, Samsung and Sprint might have made it harder to download music favorites as ringtones, but the extra steps to make a video ringtone might be a little more rewarding. To begin, collect the clips and audio needed and open up a video editor. Microsoft has a free video editor, called Microsoft Movie Maker, which works just fine.

How To Format Personal Ringtones for the Samsung ExclaimThere are a few things to remember about creating ringtones for the Exclaim. First, all ringtones need to be about 20 - 25 seconds in length. The size of the file needs to be at or below 513kb. Anything bigger than that, and the software will reject the ringtone.

Here's a quick run down on how:

  • Using instructions on how to use Windows Movie Maker, cut the songs to the right length and add the pictures or video you wish.
  • When saving your video ringtone, review how big the video will be before saving to a format.
  • If there is a .3g2 format option available, save it as that.
  • If the format isn't available, save it in a format as .avi or .wmv. Microsoft Movie Maker often automatically saves it as a .wmv.

If the .3g2 format isn't automatically available, use a free converter site like Media Convert or Zamzar's online converter. At converter sites, videos can be uploaded and in a few minutes, these converter sites will provide the proper format of .3g2.

Uploading Personal Ringtones to the Exclaim

With the ringtone created, and ready for uploading, there are a few more steps to take to include those ringyones on your phone.

  • Plug the Exclaim's memory card into your computer, and open up the files.
  • Open the file called DCIM, and inside that open file called 100SSMED.
  • Move your new ringtone video to this file, and when finished, plug your memory card back into your Exclaim.

Now that the ringtones are on the Samsung Exclaim, selecting the proper settings following the instructions below will attach a ringtone to incoming calls.

  • Click on your House button, go to Settings, then Sounds, then Ringer Type.
  • Select Incoming Calls, then Contact Entries, then All Contacts.
  • Select the My Videos option. Find your ringtone and add it.

To assign ringtones to individual people on the contact list, simply by editing the selected contact page, following the instructions to get to the My Videos folder.

When finished, the video ringtones that were customized for the Samsung Exclaim should work. These instructions also appear to work for the Samsung Rant, also provided by Sprint. Repeat the process to make as many ringtones as desired.

I did everything you stated but when I go to the last step. I see two options. (#1 in phone) And(#2 memory card). I select either and it states album is empty?

Hello Guest, do not forget to upload your ringtone to the right file. It must be in the 100SSMED file. Your phone might have the letters and numbers in different places, but it has to be the original file that has 100 on it.

When you get to the in phone or in memory card, it should be in the memory card.

You should also make sure you don't select for Ringtones, but for My Videos, before that.

Awesome. It worked for me. I can't assign a self-created ringtone/video to messages (voicemail, incoming text), however.
In another article can you describe how the memory layout is used in the phone. i.e. - Tools>6>2>1 ; how the folders BLUETOOTH, MUSIC, MEDIA are used?
Also, if I set my background to a picture on my memory, then remove the memory card and power-cycle the phone, the picture is still there! The phone must be storing the picture somewhere but it does not show up in the FileManagement. Where is it?

I found that you can't have any spaces in the file name and you should use only eight characters, though the phone does seem to truncate it when it is assigned

I followed the directions and assigned a ringtone to all incoming calls and it worked fine. Then I tried to assign a ringtone to a single caller and nothing will work now. I tried deleting the ringtones and adding them back onto the memory card and just assigning a ringtone to all incoming calls, but now when someone calls it's silent.

I followed the supplied directions and assigned a ring tone to all incoming calls. I then tried to assign a ring tone to single callers and now my ring tone won't work. When someone calls either it's silent, or it's a ringer that came with the factory phone. what is going on!?

Hey can someone, anyone answer this? This whole step by step thingy here, is it for me to hear the music when called, or does the person calling me hear it?

Great article, but I would like to add my own two cents here. This is for the folks who has data access. I recently upgraded from a Nextel i880 to the Samsung Exclaim cause my plan changed from single to family share.
The Samsung Exclaim as per many internet reviews is an excellent phone if used for the correct purpose. Mind you as of this writing this phone is less than 24 hrs old. The battery is at 65 % since initial charge and I have already downloaded 12 ringtones into it...hit every button imanigable trying out my "new toy".
I was told I would love the Moment by Sprint but reading all the internet reviews, I went with the Exclaim.
Ok to install your own ringtones, you voice, fav song etc...you need to have a pc/laptop where you can 1st make the ringtones and save as mp3. Then you need to creat a FREE acct at www.phonezoo where you can upload your personal stuff from your computer to their website. Then from there you can download them into your phone. FOR THIS YOUR FONE NEEDS TO HAVE DATA ACCESS. And it is FREE. (minus charges from your carrier).
As I said I have 12 ringtones done so far.
Tried the photos as wallpapers on the same site and it downloads to the phone then a warning error 504 msg pops up. So as of now I have not been able to make custom wallpapers yet. Still trying. Program Audacity is excellent for making your ringtones and it is also FREEWARE.

there's an easier way to do this. - go to youtube.com & find a video that's at the max 30 seconds. there's a channel (mr. heat ringtone) that has lots of options.
go to freefileconvert.com ; click on the URL DOWNLOAD tab ;copy the youtube address & paste it on the INPUT ; on the OUTPUT click 3g2 & click download.. it will download it & right click on the link "save as" & save it on your memory card ! now go to your memory card, find the video, OPTIONS, & click on where it says "ASSIGN" - VIDEO RINGER. & chose your contact ! & you're done !

Great post! Thanks for sharing. I winced at the Bing commercial featuring OK GO. They are becoming a cautionary tale of the new post-major label music biz. From corporate serfs to corporate shills/whores. Is that an improvement? I'm definitely seeing them more and hearing them less.
